On May 8, 2025, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost made history as the first American elected to the papacy, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. Born in Chicago in 1955, Prevost is a member of the Augustinian order and served extensively in Peru, where he became a bishop and acquired citizenship. His election reflects a desire for a leader capable of bridging divides within the Catholic Church and addressing contemporary global challenges.

Pope Leo XIV’s leadership is committed to unity, transparency, and social justice. He aims to continue the reforms initiated by his predecessor, Pope Francis, particularly the emphasis on synodality—a consultative process involving clergy and laity in Church decision-making. In his first address, Leo XIV emphasized the importance of a Church that listens, serves, and unites, signaling a pastoral approach focused on inclusivity and dialogue.

Addressing the Church’s handling of sexual abuse scandals is a priority for Pope Leo XIV. While he has been praised for his role in suppressing the abusive Sodalitium Christianae Vitae movement in Peru, he faces criticism for his handling of certain abuse cases during his tenure in Chicago and Chiclayo. Survivor groups have called for a global zero-tolerance policy and greater transparency, urging the Pope to take decisive action to restore trust in the Church’s commitment to justice and accountability.

Pope Leo XIV also seeks to balance tradition with progress. He has shown openness to enhancing women’s roles in Church governance, appointing women to significant positions within the Vatican. However, he maintains traditional stances on ordination, opposing the ordination of women as priests and expressing caution regarding their ordination as deacons. His approach reflects a willingness to expand lay participation while upholding longstanding Church doctrines.

Environmental stewardship is another focal point of his papacy. Drawing from his experiences in climate-vulnerable regions like Peru, Pope Leo XIV advocates for a reciprocal relationship with nature and urges global action to address climate change. His commitment to social justice extends to supporting migrants and the marginalized, emphasizing the Church’s role in promoting dignity and compassion for all.

Pope Leo XIV adopts a conciliatory tone when navigating internal divisions, particularly within the U.S. Church. While he appreciates traditional elements, he is not strictly a traditionalist and is expected to continue his predecessor’s progressive vision. His American background and administrative experience position him to mediate between conservative and progressive factions, aiming to foster unity and clarity within the Church.

As Pope Leo XIV embarks on his papacy, he faces the challenge of guiding the Catholic Church through a period of transformation. His leadership will be defined by his ability to uphold the Church’s core values while addressing the evolving needs of its global congregation.
